      A recent study from Canada has shown that the number of hours spent watching TV between two years and four years old can have a detrimental effect on the size of a child’s waistline by the age of 10. The study, which was published in a BioMed Central journal, looked at the television habits of 1,314 children. One extra hour of TV viewing each week at age four could affect the muscle fitness of a child aged 10 and also increase the size of their waste by half a millimetre.

    A study carried out by researchers at Bristol University has shown that children who are overweight at age nine have an increased risk of suffering heart disease as an adult. As approximately 200,000 deaths in Britain each year are attributed to heart disease, this is a worrying result for many.     Children in Ipswich have been taking part in a challenge to produce a tasty, healthy meal for a place on Junior Masterchef. Pupils at St Mary’s primary school in Ipswich have a healthy eating and exercise programme, with children aged from six years old taking part. The children all love watching the programme on television which has inspired them to learn about healthy eating as a lifestyle choice.

    Increase in children’s exercise as trampolines make a comeback

    According to a survey carried out online, trampolining is among the top three sports most enjoyed by children. Three hours each week on average, is spent on a trampoline which is a third more than spent on basketball and cycling, the other favourite pastimes. Research has shown huge health benefits for children and adults alike, while still being a fun activity.

    Early signs of heart disease found in teenagers

    Researchers at the British Columbia Children’s Hospital have found early indications of heart disease in teenagers. The research was carried out on a group of 63 obese children with an average age of 13. The children were showing ‘stiffness’ in the aorta, which is the largest artery in the body.
